LV Liverpool move a 65t reel for N-Power

11/24/2006

LV Liverpool (with LV Tilbury initial assistance) successfully organize the removal of a 65t piece of reel and cable/drum from the Birkenhead side of the river over to Liverpool, for long-term storage on behalf of our client N-Power Renewables.

The reel will be used as spare during N-Power’s continuing work with wind-farm development along the North Wales coast.

The reel had lain idle at Cammell Laird former shipyard site at Birkenhead for some years and was blocking access to work sheds that had recently been leased to a local manufacturer by the site owners, Reddington Finance Ltd.

With close liason with the Mersey Docks & Harbour Company, the Mersey Mammoth floating crane was employed, with a 200t lift capability, and ten crew.

Due to tidal constraints there was a window of only one and a half hours for the Mammoth to enter the Tranmere Wet Basin, rig up, lift and depart.

4 x 21t chains were secured to the frame of the reel then the chains were connected to 4 x 20m x 30t wire rope slings suspended below a 15m x 200t locomotive beam. The beam was connected to the main lifting hook by 2 x 2m x 65t endless wire rope slings.

The whole operation was completed from 10.45 a.m. to 11.50 a.m. and went very smoothly, despite the extremely wet and windswept conditions.
